Know Before You Buy…Tips to Getting Your Next Refrigerator

Here at Better Housekeeping Shop we know buying a new appliance, especially something as important as a refrigerator is a big deal.  It’s a large purchase, both because of the expense but also because it’s one of the most-used appliances in your home.  A refrigerator stores your food and groceries, keeps items fresh, and also becomes a large aesthetic presence in your kitchen.  So we decided to ask Michael Belforti, the 3rd generation family owner of Better Housekeeping Shop, to offer up some tips on what to think about and ask yourself before coming in to look at a new refrigerator.

  1. Consider the features.  Says Belforti, think about the fridge you currently have.  What do you like about it, what would you change?  Buying a new refrigerator is not an everyday purchase so you want to really make sure that when you do get a new one, you prioritize the features that are most important to you.  Whether it’s an ice machine, a water dispenser or maybe a sound alerting you to an open door, think about what’s most essential to you and your family.  Knowing ahead of time your “must-haves” will help narrow down your options.
  1. Pick a style.  Much like it’s important to consider what features you want in your refrigerator, it’s also vital that you have an idea of the style or orientation you’d like.  Do you want a side-by-side fridge-freezer model?  Or a freezer drawer below the fridge – or perhaps above it?  There are plenty of options and each one comes with certain advantages, based on your specific needs.  And don’t forget to also consider which style would work best in your kitchen space and the other appliances you have.
  1. Measure the width, height, and depth of the space where you will install your refrigerator and also consider any small doorways leading to your kitchen.  According to Belforti, one of the toughest calls we get is when a customer calls, frantic, saying the fridge that is supposed to be installed doesn’t fit in the allotted space.  Be sure to not only measure the space, but account for clearance for the top door hinge and make sure the doors won’t hit anything when they are open.
  1. How important is Energy Efficiency?  Belforti says that these days most new models are much more energy-efficient than those of years past.  This move towards efficiency will undoubtedly help save you money on your energy bill, but even amongst the new models they’re not all created equal.  When looking at refrigerators, look for the Energy Star rating, a government-issued energy grade.  Or for those without an Energy Star rating, the yellow EnergyGuide label that comes with most appliances will let you know how efficient it is, so you can compare.

Of course, we are always here to answer any of your appliance questions but we also want our customers to feel knowledgeable and educated about their important purchases.  At Better Housekeeping Shop our goal is to create customers for life.  We work very hard to make sure that every person that enters our store feels valued and respected.  If you’re looking to buy an appliance or want to speak to one of our sales associates, stop in any time or give us a call, 732-741-4310.
